APPLIED MATHEMATICS / SIMULATION ENGINEER
6 month end of study internship at Ansys France in our Lyon office in Villeurbanne, for students currently studying in final year of engineering in France
Keywords: Floating wind-turbine, Hydrodynamics, Multi-Body Dynamics, Numerical Simulation.
About ANSYS
If you've ever seen a rocket taking off, taken a plane, driven a car, used a computer, touched a mobile device, crossed a bridge, or worn a connected device, then chances are you've used a product where ANSYS played a key role. ANSYS is a global leader in numerical simulation, helping the most innovative companies deliver better products to their customers. Their extensive and powerful portfolio of simulation software enables them to solve the most complex design challenges and design products that are bound only by imagination.
Objectives
We are offering an exciting internship opportunity to contribute to research in the rapidly advancing field of floating wind turbine simulation. As the demand for renewable energy grows, floating offshore wind turbines are becoming essential for capturing wind resources in deep waters, where conventional fixed-bottom turbines are not feasible. Supported by floating platforms and mooring systems anchored to the seabed, these turbines operate in highly dynamic marine environments, subject to complex interactions between wind, waves, and structural forces.
Therefore, to achieve robust and accurate simulations of floating wind turbines, multiple physical fields must be integrated and coupled, including aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, servomechanisms, elasticity, and structural dynamics. Among these, servomechanisms focus on the turbine's control systems. With ever-changing wind conditions, control systems manage key functions such as generator control, pitch control, and yaw control to optimize energy production while mitigating excessive loads that could damage the turbine or shorten its lifespan.
Elasticity and structural dynamics analysis, meanwhile, focuses on how deformations in the turbine's components—such as blades and towers—affect overall performance and structural integrity. These analyses are essential for understanding how large-scale components respond to external forces, particularly in challenging marine environments. Various simulation methods, including component mode synthesis elastic analysis, beam theory, and high-fidelity stress analysis, can offer different insights into how structural dynamics influence turbine behavior.
As an intern, you will have the opportunity to advance these simulation techniques. You could contribute to the development of control system integration and assessment or refine existing methods for analyzing the elasticity and structural dynamics of floating wind turbines. Your work may involve learning current simulation tools and methods, and building new prototypes based on them to extend the scope of analysis. This internship offers a unique opportunity to explore cutting-edge topics within renewable energy and play a role in shaping the future of floating wind turbine simulation technology.
