The internship will be based at the ANSYS office in Lyon and will require some travel to Poitiers at the hospital we are collaborating with:

 

Automated workflow for optimized transcranial Direct Current Stimulation
based on medical imaging and 3D simulation

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique that has gained a significant interest due to its promising results in treating patients with psychiatric disorder. It consists in delivering low amplitude current (0.5-2mA) through electrodes placed on the scalp and acts on the so-called brain plasticity. A serious limitation of current clinical protocols that determine electrodes placement and induced current is that they are not well suited for optimal current delivery in the target region. Simulating tDCS using personalized 3D models of the patient can address this issue and might improve treatment outcomes [1]. The aim of the internship is to explore the early steps necessary to implement such an approach. The first task consists in getting familiar with several technical tools to fulfill the mission, such as Ansys tools in terms of geometry editing and physics-based simulation, and open-source tools for MRI brain segmentation. The second task concerns electrode model design based on commercial devices available. Then, a semi-automated workflow that goes from brain MRI to computational model with custom electrode parameters (size, position, and other parameters of interest) is to be implemented. The end goal of the internship is to use this workflow to determine the optimal electrode setting that better activates the target region.

The internship will take place in Ansys Villeurbanne facilities and is in close collaboration with the Henri Laborit hospital center in Poitiers, where some travels are to be expected.

This internship will lead to a CIFRE PhD position within Ansys in collaboration with the Henri Laborit hospital center.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s level in Computer Science, biomedical engineering, or related technical degree.
  • Good written and oral communication skills in French and English
  • Basic programming skills in python/C++
  • Experience with Ansys tools is a plus
  • Curiosity and sensitivity to biomedical research is highly appreciated
