The Sound team conceives and develops software enabling users to listen to, analyze and design sound sources based on real acoustics measurements or acoustic simulation results.


Drones and VTOLs (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) are rising technologies. Many companies have interest in them for numerous applications fields: goods deliveries, transport of persons, agriculture, video, etc.

Study of the noise generated by these aircraft is crucial for manufacturers, whether it be for sound design problematics or for noise pollution study.

In this context, Ansys Sound offers a software solution enabling sound synthesis (also known as “auralization”) of flyover noise produced by flying objects, by propagating to the ground noise emitted by the source(s), considering trajectory and environment. This software allows companies to gain time by simulating the noise produced by their aircrafts instead of carrying long and expensive measurement campaigns, that would require a working prototype.

Currently, the algorithm used in this software allow a realistic sound synthesis for passenger aircrafts, but they can be improved the case of drones and VTOLs.

The goal of this internship is to study what are the parameters that can enhance the quality of the existing sound synthesis algorithms, in order to improve accuracy of drones and VTOLs’ auralization.

The internship will take place in several stages :

Literature study and understanding of existing algorithm. Identifying different factors that can improve our algorithms for drones and VTOLs
Algorithm implementation in Matlab or Python based on previously established factors
Comparative study of the impact of the tested factors on the auralization’s quality

During the internship, the trainee will have access to:

Existing code and algorithms for aircrafts’ sound synthesis
Simulation and measurement data from Ansys’ customers
Various audio hardware (soundcard, speakers, headset) in order to evaluate the sound quality of the sound synthesis algorithms

Moreover, the intern will receive support from signal processing and acoustics specialists in the Sound team.


Postgraduate or last year university or last year engineering school student with a major in Signal Processing / Acoustic / Audio.

Required skills:

Audio Signal Processing (Fourier Transform, Time-Frequency Representation, Filtering)
Acoustic Propagation
Matlab or Python
Appreciated skills:

Acoustic simulation
Good communication and relationship skills
Proficient in English (spoken and written)
French is a plus, but not mandatory

Duration: 6 months

Location: Lyon or Aix-en-Provence (France)
