Summary / Role Purpose

The R&D Engineer II will be part of the Ansys Fluids Business Unit. The R&D Engineer II will perform machine learning research in the area of computational fluid dynamics and turbulence to augment the Ansys flagship CFD solvers.


Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop Machine Learning (ML) approaches to enhance CFD methods for turbulent flow simulations by
    • enhancing numerical methods for speed and accuracy
    • enhancing turbulence models (RANS and LES)
    • exploring new and advanced solver techniques based on ML methods.
  • Implement such methods into ANSYS CFD solvers using modern programming paradigms.
  • Create reference solutions for the ML processes using DNS/LES methods on large scale computers.
  • Work with an international team of experts for optimal formulation and implementation of ML methods.
  • Design efficient/scalable software for large scale data analyses, model development, model validation and model implementation.
  • Evolve into a leading member of the international R&D community on the application of ML techniques to CFD.
  • Work in complex data structures - Diagnose and fix code problems.
  • Create unit regression and/or system-level tests to thoroughly validate new features or changes.
  • Optimize code to improve computational efficiency and memory capacity.


Minimum Education/Certification Requirements and Experience

  • Master’s degree in physics, mathematics, Computer Science, or engineering with a minimum of 2 years of software development experience 
  • Experience with building machine learning solutions and leveraging specific machine learning architectures (e.g., deep learning, convolutional networks, etc.).
  • Expertise in CFD methods (numerical methods, LES)
  • Expertise in C/C++ with strong algorithm implementation abilities 
  • Expertise in Python with focus on deep learning frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit Learn or AutoML.


Preferred Qualifications and Skills

  • Masters with a minimum of 4 years of software development experience or a PhD degree in computer graphics, computer vision, physics or applied mathematics or engineering 
  • Experience with GPU programming (CUDA, OpenGL, OpenCL, DirectX).
  • Publication in leading workshops or conferences.
