The Senior R&D Engineer contributes to the development of materials data products and supporting systems. In this role, the Senior R&D Engineer will use advanced technical and problem-solving skills to help the team tackle complex issues, satisfy customer requirements, and accomplish development objectives, with a focus on sustainability.


Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Understands design for sustainability, life cycle assessment (LCA) and the circular economy and performs development activities to incorporate data and software solutions for these areas into data products used for materials selection, product design and to support teaching.
  • Participates in sustainability product planning and supports product management in researching and developing new solutions for customers.
  • Performs complex development activities with a focus on sustainability, but not limited to this domain.
  • Project work will vary, but typically involves independent research, data manipulation and analysis, preparing internal reports and collaborating with experts in the field.
  • Taking part in UK and EU funded collaborative projects, and representing Ansys in sustainability industry working groups.
  • Employs best practices and helps to maintain them through technical reviews and mentoring.


Minimum Education/Certification Requirements and Experience

  • BS, MSc or PhD in material science, an engineering discipline, architecture, or a related physical science subject.
  • Working experience of performing product life cycle assessments (LCA), investigating sustainable material solutions and writing technical reports summarizing key findings.
  • Experience of scientific data analysis, visualization, and preferably a knowledge of relational databases.


Preferred Qualifications and Skills

  • Technical knowledge and experience of reviewing scientific literature, analyzing technical data related to sustainability, ecodesign, critical materials and the circular economy and generating indicators to enable analysis of material, product or component performance (e.g. CO2 footprint, embodied energy or water usage).
  • A good understanding of materials and materials simulation would be advantageous.
  • Experience of writing code to automate data analysis/manipulation processes (e.g. Python, C#, Excel VBA macros…) would advantageous.
  • Strong communication skills in written and spoken English.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a geographically distributed team.
